For the second season running the Giants signed a top Scottish forward, Colin Shields following in the footsteps of Tony Hand.
Brought in later into the season after a succesful spell playing NCAA College Hockey in the USA, Colin filled the final piece of the 05-06 Giants team jigsaw, quickly settling into his top line role as a centre and made an immediate impact bringing balance to the lines and adding an extra creative dimension.
The following year Shields returned to North America where he split 57 games between Idaho and Fresno putting the puck in the net a credible 16 times to go with 27 assists for 43 points. Despite these numbers Shields was tempted once more across the Atlantic last season when he signed up for the Newcastle Vipers.
Once in Newcastle, despite a bit of a slow start, Shields had his most productive year since his junior days, despite missing a few games with a minor injury. 36 goals were added to 35 assists for 71 points in just 55 games.
Shields returns to Belfast for the 2008/9 season with the comfort of a 2 year contract keeping him in Belfast for the foreseeable future, a benefit for himself and for the organisation.
