Signed as coach of the 2005-2006 Giants, Ed Courtenay found himself playing at the start of the season due to a lack of players.
Despite intending to retire to the bench, Ed Courtenay showed the form UK hockey fans grew used to in his previous spells with Sheffield Steelers and Ayr Eagles. After a slow start, Ed showed he was almost irreplaceable and continued playing.
After a spell as bench coach, Courtenay returned to the ice during the 2006/7 season and showed he still had the knack of racking up the points. This led to the appointment for a third season as coach, and once again a player-coach role.
