His surname may begin with "Angel", but he certainly does not play like one! This seriously tough player joined the Giants after a long career in the Minor Leagues in North America.
His commitment to protecting his team-mates at Portland Pirates earned him a call-up to the Washington Capitals where he guaranteed that his name was on the stat sheets by getting a two minute minor penalty.
Giants fans had hoped he would provide plenty of power on the ice and that if he were to take penalties, he would at least takes an opposition player to the penalty box with him after a good hard donnybrook.
Disappointingly, for fight fans anyway, this rarely happened as he was kept on a tight rein by Coach Hand.
Known by Giants fans for having "The Worst slap shot in the history of the game..... Ever", Mel scored two of the most memorable goals seen in the Odyssey. One was a great neat finish at the back post. Into his own net. The other was a wrist shot that deflected off a Devils defenceman's stick, looped up in the air as if going out of playm and as Devils goalie Cugnett relaxed and leaned on his bar, the puck dropped from above the level of the scoreboard and into the virtually unguarded net.
