BlackHawk Down...

06-Nov-2004

The Belfast Giants hosted the London Racers at the Odyssey Arena for the second time this season. However it was a Racers team that had undergone radical changes in the last week. The arrival of two players direct from the NHL triggered great excitement in both the team and the league. This was their first real test and the Giants were ready for it.

In an end to end game the Giants showed that the Racers addition of players from the highest hockey league made no difference as they beat the London team by 2 goals to 1.

In the second period, a Todd Kelman strike from just inside the blueline, one reminiscent of a #6 of times gone by, flew by the racers netminder and into the back of the net. Kelman put his fist in the air and made sure the NHLers knew that life in the Elite League wasn't gonna be as easy as they may have thought.

Giants enforcer Mel Anglestad gave Racers new 'Show' star Eric Cairns a few friendly words of advice, and made sure the NHL defenceman was kept quiet in a game where both he and Scott Nicholl (Chicago Blackhawks former assistant captain) did not prove their calibre.

The Giants doubled their lead after 37 minutes. Diarmuid Kelly took the puck into the corner, laid out two Racers players with the greatest of ease, passed on to player/coach Tony Hand, who, from "The Office", placed the puck perfectly for George Awada in the right circle to fire past Sylvain Daigle in the Racers net.

The Racers pushed hard and the game reached fever pitch when, with two minutes to go, Dusan Halloun came off a nice move from Tremblay to put the puck past Martin Klempa and give the London team a fighting chance in the dying seconds.

The Giants had a perfect chance with an open net to finish the game, but complacency allowed the Racers to redeem the puck. They couldn't work with it however and the Giants head to Sheffield tomorrow night with a good win under their belt.
