Despite searching long and hard, and making offers to several players on deadline day, as the midnight cut off point arrived, it looked like the Giants were going to end up empty handed in their search for a replacement for Benoit Doucet and Brock McBride.
Doucet and McBride were considered the pivotal members of the team’s offence in the early season before Doucet was struck by a highly unfortunate injury when match officials fell on him breaking up an altercation, while McBride was tempted into Europe to play in Slovenia for Olimpija Ljubljana in the Austrian EBEL. This left the Giants somewhat lacking in top end firepower and left coach Christianson looking for an “impact” forward.
In the end, the sort of impact that came was one more commonly associated with fists rather than on the scoreboard as former Giant Mike Hoffman made a late return to Belfast. Starting this season in the ECHL, Hoffman has also plied his trade for AHL side Portland Pirates playing 13 games, picking up 2 assists and 39 penalty minutes on the way.
While not the impact player some were hoping for, it will be interesting to see if Hoffman can help the Giants on in their push for silverware. Despite his tough background, Hoffman did put up points for Belfast in the 2010/11 season (45 games 10+18=28 , with 53 PIMS) and the presence of the big man may open up the ice for others to thrive again.
