The Belfast Giants today announced the departure of playoff winning coach Steve Thornton who departs Belfast on a high to take up a job outside hockey.
However, no time has been wasted in finding a replacement and the sixth coach in Giants history, following Dave Whistle, Rob Stewart, Tony Hand, Ed Courtenay and Thornton, will be Doug Christiansen moving over from Edinburgh.
Christiansen arrived in Edinburgh as a player coach and remained there for 3 years leading the Capitals to their highest position of 6th in the season just gone, being voted Ice Hockey Writers' Coach of the Year.
Christiansen's playing role was curtailed last season due to a serious knee injury and it remains to be seen if he will return to a playing role.
