The Coors Belfast Giants today announced the return of Colin Shields and David Phillips for the forthcoming Elite League Campaign. Shields returns for the 2nd year of his 2-year contract, while Philips signs on for another year with the Giants following a fantastic debut season in Belfast
Both players competed in every one of the giants 71 games last season, Shields picking up the IHJUK Award for Best British Forward scoring 92 points. Philips, affectionately referred to as “Cheesy” by sections of the fans, belied his young age with a solid defensive performance both for the Giants and in his bronze medal winning trip to the World championships in Poland with Team GB.
In a statement on the Giants official website, Coach Steve Thornton defined his delight at the resigning of these two British players saying:
”They both exceeded my expectations of them prior to the year beginning. Shields emerged as a genuine superstar in this league and was one of the most consistent players in the league. Phillips was our best all-round defencemen last season, and our most improved player.
In other league news, doubt has been shed on the future of the Manchester Phoenix within the EIHL. A meeting is to take place on Thursday with fans in which management proposals will be discussed. Further news is available on UK Hockey LIVE
