The Knock-Out Cup was established in the wake of the unfortunate mid-season dissolution of the London Racers in 2005. It’s primary aim was to fulfill the already reserved ice time and fixtures for teams who would lose out by the lost games against the Racers. The cup has now established itself as “The Fourth Domestic Honour” behind the League, Playoffs and Challenge Cup. However other than it’s inaugural season, the KO Cup has been a trophy normally missing from the Giants fixture list, previous regimes seemingly deeming it superfluous to the seasons fixtures.
However, Giants GM Todd Kelman last week, in an interview with UTV, made it clear that he and coach Steve Thornton had decided to enter all possible domestic competitions in a bid to accumulate as much silverware as possible this season.
Tonight the Coventry Blaze face Steve Thorntons Belfast giants in the first leg of the Quarter-Final. But what sets this game apart from others in the Giants history, is that this is the first of 2 games to take place in Dundonald IceBowl. Opened in 1986, Dundonald IceBowl, mainly used by the Giants as training ice, is the oldest active ice-rink in Northern Ireland, and with limited seating, the atmosphere for tonight’s match up is destined to be electric.
The Giants come into the game following a hard fought OT win over the league leading Sheffield Steelers, While Paul Thompsons Blaze side took a tight 2-1 win in Altringham over the Manchester Phoenix.
At this time there is no planned webcast of tonights fixture. So from 7.15pm there will be Live Text Commentary from Dundonald IceBowl. Join Patrick for information on all the action from Dundonald, and join in with you thoughts, predictions and general banter; updates@kingdomofthegiants.com
