The season has just begun and JimmySqueeker looks over the first couple of weeks of the new look Belfast Giants...
The new Belfast Giants roster have been together now just over two weeks. In that time they have played in two successful friendlies, an open training session, a league win and a Cup winning away game also. In this limited time spent on the ice the roster have gelled together and produced 28 goals, okay 19 of those were against a recreational team but they still had to set them up and put them away.
We have seen the introduction of new faces to the Giant's roster, some playing their inaugural season in British ice hockey. Names like Bobby "Triple R" Robins, Andrew Martin, Paul Deniset and Tyler Howells will jump to the mind of the fans. Bobby Robins having already scored six points in two games already showing evidence that he knows where to put himself for scoring opportunities.
The whispers around the Odyssey last Saturday were of how fast paced, skilled and strong those guys looked. The one stand out player that epitomises these principles is Andrew Martin. Quite frankly the movement from this left winger is jaw dropping to say the least. Especially in his transitional plays when he moves the puck from defence to offence. Simply put, he makes Speedy Gonzales look like Regular Gonzales.
Tyler Howells is showing promise as he plays with the strength of a power forward coming from defence. Despite his 5ft7 170lb frame he gives the impression of being a grinder and strong passing play maker. Some like the Bobby but a good few will prefer the Howells.
The new players are not the only face lift that the Giants Organisation has had. Gordie has a new look, free give-aways, hot dog cannon and the return of the old favourite, "Chuck-a-puck". To me this spells the foundations to a fun filled season. The on ice entertainment has had a promising start which has mirrored the first home game at the Odyssey. I hope for more of the same this coming Saturday and expect a tough physical game against the Mincoffs (bless me) Vipers.
Ladies and Gentlemen, the fun looks to be back in the Odyssey hockey.
