It doesn't seem all that long ago that the Coors Belfast Giants were languishing at the bottom of the Elite Ice Hockey League, with some fans calling for heads to roll. What a turn around we've seen since then.
With a 3-1 win over the Hull Stingrays last night, the Giants not only increased their current winning streak to 16 games in a row, but also claimed the top spot in the league table from the Coventry Blaze. Along the way, the Giants have occupied every position in the table, from tenth right up to first.
But before you start popping the Champagne corks, the league title race is a long way from being won. Coventry sit in second spot, just one point behind the Giants, but have a worrying 4 games in hand. Current league places aside, its still the Blaze then who have the stronger position. The Giants must rely on other teams taking points away from Coventry to really stay in the running for the title.
Its not all out of the Giants hands though, as they still have two games against the Blaze themselves, which could turn out to be title deciders. The first of these games is at home, in the Odyssey Arena, this Saturday (2nd Feb). Face-off is 7pm. Don't miss it!
