The Coors Belfast Giants have changed their fortunes of late and on Sunday night achieved their 5th consecutive EIHL win with a Penalty Shots victory over the Hull Stingrays. Thursday night sees them play host to the other current “in-form team” in the EIHL, Cardiff Devils.
Cardiff’s last loss was in October 20th to the Sheffield Steelers and since then they have rolled over Nottingham, Newcastle and Manchester among others in a 7 game winning streak. Helped in no small part to a front line made up of Max Birbraer, Sylvain Deschatelets and Jason Silverthorn, who together this season have totalled 80 points with 29 of them being goals.
Deschalelets has come to the forefront of the team after a slow start that saw Cardiff Player/Coach Gerard Adams put the French-Canadian on 2 weeks notice. But a string of top performances against Newcastle, Belfast and Sheffield saved him his place and led to the Welsh teams current run of 14 league points.
Ed Courtenay has turned his Belfast team around from the team who were 5 games without a win earlier this season, to a team who are 5 league games without loss currently. A lot of this is down to Peter Campbell, who is averaging a goal per game, with 13 points from his seven appearances in a Belfast shirt.
Mark Dutiaume, in his blog on the Official Site, said “would play goalie if it meant it would help the team”, and his work in defense over the last few weeks has been invaluable. However he’ll have it cut out for him on Thursday night if he is to pin-back Cardiffs Kazakh-Canadian attack.
A big help in this plight will be Shane Johnson, now settled back in his old #4 jersey, the former Giants Captain spent some time in Cardiff this season and will be relishing the chance to get back against the team he helped to beat the Giants at the Odyssey only a month or so ago.
Face off is at 7.30pm for this midweek extravaganza and is sure to be a fantastic game between two sides on top form. With Cardiff on a streak of 7 and Belfast on a streak of 5… for one team… Thursdays game will be the end.
