Coors Belfast Giants have today revealed the return of former club captain Shane Johnson
The Giants have been lacking in defense since the injuries to Trevor Johnson and Roman Gavalier with Mark Dutiaume filling in temporarily. However the signing of Shane Johnson should go some way to stemming the defensive problems that has seen the Giants concede 14 goals in the last 5 games.
Johnson joins Sutter as a late arrival to this Giants squad and one of the players Ed Courtenay hopes will help the Giants turn their poor start to the season around. Johnson’s 150 points in a Belfast Giants shirt include goals in the last ISL Playoff Final against the London Knights, and as one of the original Giants players from the inaugural season, “Our Wee Shane” is a favourite among the Odyssey Faithful.
Shane has spent the last couple of seasons “filling in” positions, mainly for the Sheffield Steelers, and more recently with the Cardiff Devils. However it is Belfast that Shane considers his home, having taken on a coaching role with the Belfast Bruins before he was called into action at the Hallam FM Arena by Dave Matsos last month.
With two defensemen currently on the injured list, there is no immediate requirement for any import players to be shown the door by Ed Courtenay, however rumours are abound of various other players making their way to Belfast, and Courtenay’s plans for changes may just come to fruition.
With the Basingstoke Bison visiting the Odyssey Arena on Thursday evening, Shane Johnson will be looking to make an immediate impact and the Giants will be looking to once again start climbing the table.
