A poor weekend for the Belfast Giants left them bottom of the Elite League Table.
On Saturday night in the Odyssey Arena, a Tony Hand inspired Manchester Phoenix team scored 5 unanswered goals to come from 1-0 down to lead 5-1 early in the 3rd period, Tony having a Hand in 4 of those 5 goals and once again looking untouchable on the ice.
The Giants 3rd line sparked a mini revival with Mark Morrison getting on the score sheet with a nicely worked goal, before Ed Courtenay continued the comeback with a great finish to make it 3-5. Unfortunately Brett Clouthier scored an empty netter on the buzzer to make it 3-6 and end the game.
As if that wasn't bad enough, the Giants then faced a tough trip into Coventry to face the arch rivals Coventry Blaze, a rink in which the Giants have only ever won once (having lost 12 and drawn 2) in their history.
The tally in the loss column moved up to unlucky 13 as Coventry Blaze skated away with a 6-2 victory.
Former Giant Curtis Huppe will be delighted to have scored in just the second minute to set his new team on their way, as the Blaze managed to get 6 different players on the score sheet.
All the Giants could muster in response was a double by Scott Cameron, one of the new signings who has impressed early in his Giants career.
Not a fantastic start to the season then for the Belfast Giants, with 3 consecutive big losses. And it doesn't get any easier with the early Elite League pace setters, the Newcastle Vipers, coming into town this Friday night, Another former Belfast Giant Jeff Hutchins will no doubt be hoping to get one over on his old team in the same manner as Curtis Huppe. Let's hope the Giants can send the Vipers packing with their tails between their legs!
