Following yesterdays announcement that the Coors Belfast Giants are to face the Edinburgh Capitals in the seasons opening home fixture, the full fixture list for the 2007-08 BMI Baby Elite League Championship was published on the Giants official site this afternoon.
Not only does the early publication of these fixtures show the growing strength of the Elite League, but it also allows Belfast Giants supporters to start their planning early for those vital and more entertaining away matches
Among them are the early visit to the Skydome to face the Coventry Blaze, now with former Giants Curtis Huppe in their number, on the 16th September. An October road trip along the M62 will be the order for some, with a visit to Hull on the 13th October followed by the first trip of the season to the home of the Manchester Phoenix on 14th October. Similarly there is a St Patrick’s Day Weekend trip to Sheffield to face David Matsos’s Steelers side on March 15th before a race up the A1 to take on Rob Wilsons MobilX Vipers, now featuring Belfast’s top scorer for last season, Jeff Hutchins.
Due to popular demand, every Giants fans favourite league double header, away to Edinburgh, will once again take place in December this season. The Giants visiting Murrayfield on the 8th and 9th December, in what now has become a traditional match up between the celtic sides and always encourages a large Giants contingent to cross the Irish Sea
The controversial “home” fixtures to take place at the Dundalk Ice Dome, have been spread across the season and will feature the Hull Stingrays (Sat 6th October), Manchester Phoenix (Sat 27th October), Edinburgh Capitals (Sat 26th January) and the final home game of the league campaign against the Basingstoke Bison (Thursday 20th March)
In his regular blog on the official website, General Manager Todd Kelman spoke about his desire to cut down the number of congested fixtures the Giants have had to endure in previous seasons. Especially having 3 games in 4 nights that previously dogged the Belfast teams’ fitness. His endevours have paid off with sure instances only occurring twice as the season pans out, and hopefully Kelmans input has put Ed Courtenay's side in the driving seat as the new EIHL Season looms ever closer
Due to the historical instability of initial fixture lists in the EIHL, this list will be added to KotG over the next few weeks, allowing for any last minute amendments to be incorporated.
