So, the seventh season in Giant history has drawn to a close with a disappointing Playoff Semi Final loss in a shootout. A season which promised so much but in the end didn't quite live up to expectation. However we have to be happy with a second place in the league and the aforementioned Playoff finals weekend appearance.
Once again the trophies were spread around the bmibaby British Elite Ice Hockey League with Coventry claiming a double of the Montieth Bowl and Challenge Cup, Cardiff the British Knockout Cup and the Nottingham Panthers ending a long drought and winning the playoffs with all 3 rounds of the new format won on penalty shots.
In the land of the Giants we reached the end of an era. The last remaining "original" Giant Todd Kelman hangs up the skates for one last time to move into a new role as General Manager, replacing John Elliott. Good luck to Todd for the future and thanks to John for all the work over the years.
Some personal milestones were reached too. Jason Ruff proved his class, becoming the first Giant to 200 points, the first Giant to 100 goals, and the now all time top point scorer in franchise history. Todd Kelman broke the 400 game barrier. Graeme Walton scored twice on home ice, once in a proper game! The retired Ed Courtenay returned to the ice and showed he still had the skills and vision. Four goalies iced in games for the Giants. And local hero Mark Morrison made history by wearing the Assistant Captain "A" becoming the first local to have such an honour.
The early off season has held some hockey interest with some of the Giants heading off to play representative level hockey. Graeme Walton getting the call for Team GB&NI to play in Slovenija and Mark Morrison , Davy Morrison, Gareth Martin, Hugh Smyth and Kevin Kelly all turning out for Ireland in the succesful Division 3 championship in Dundalk. Congratulations to those Irish players and their team mates on promotion and a silver medal!
Thanks to you all for visiting the Kingdom, and please keep checking back. We may be into the off-season, but now the time for signings, rumours, counter-rumours and blind speculation has begun. It may be the off-season, but it certainly won't be boring!
