29-Dec-2006 | Discuss this ArticleThe Coors Belfast Giants had come under fire in recent weeks with poor results leading to 3 points from the previous 12 available. However the visit of the Nottingham Panthers, themselves on a good run of form, brought an emphatic response from the current league leaders
In a gritty game littered with defensive mistakes, mainly on the side of Mike Ellis's visitors, Ed Courtenay's side hit 7 goals past veteran netminder Ratislav Rovnianek. The game however retained it's edge with the Panthers hitting back every time the Giants took the lead, leaving the Odyssey crowd on edge as to the final outcome.
Goals from Leigh Jamieson,Mark Morrison and 2 from Marc Levers showed up the depth of this Giants side, The local and British talent coming to the fore with spectacular results. Further goals from Jeff Hutchins and two from Giants all time leading scorer Jason Ruff, gave the reigning league champions the numbers as the Panthers could only hit 4 back with goals from Sean McAslan, James Ferrara, Dave Clarke and former Belfast Giants forward Rod Stevens.
This will be an encouraging win for the Giants side and team who have struggled to retain form of late. Coach, team and fans alike will be hoping they retain that form for the visit of the Edinburgh Capitals on Saturday. The Capitals, one of the league top goal scoring teams, despite their low table position, took 2 points away from the Odyssey Arena only a few weeks ago on a penalty shootout.
Saturdays game will not only be the last Giants game of 2006, a year that saw them lift the EIHL Title, but also the last game for 2 long weeks. Ed Courtenay will be hoping his side take the points before a period of time in which other chasing teams will be hoping to gain on the League leaders points deficit
