Alternatively, how long is a piece of string? This season, the Coors Belfast Giants have been inconsistent, yet at the same time, consistent. The team is at the moment unable to put a string of wins together. Yet each week, in spite of Coach Ed Courtenay demanding that the players put in a full sixty minutes of effort, they have only really kicked into top gear for the final ten minutes of the third period.
As it goes, tonights game against Sheffield was no different. Although the Giants took the lead thanks to the legend that is Jason Ruff, The Steelers then went on to dominate much of the rest of the game, scoring four unanswered goals in the space of fifteen minutes, until JP Morin managed to pull one back for the Giants towards the end of the second period.
This is were the Giants being consistent comes in. As has been the case several times already this season, with just over 10 minutes left in the game, the team came to life. Curtis Huppe's goal sparked tonights comeback. Mark Dutiaume then followed suit, with Jason Ruff no far behind him, to put the Giants back in charge with only eight minutes left of regulation time. However, the Steelers were not down and out, and with only twenty-six seconds left, Jonathan Phillips tied the game.
Thankfully, this year there is overtime. And with the clock ticking down, Curtis Huppe fired home the Giants winner, with Mark Dutiaume getting yet another assist for his fourth point of the game, ensuring the Giants got two valuable road points.
The Giants now travel to Mobilx to meet the Vipers, who also had a stern test away to Basingstoke where they came away with a narrow 4-3 victory. Game starts at 19.00.
