The Coors Belfast Giants secured a second consecutive four point weekend with an overtime shoot-out victory in 'Mobilx country', on Sunday evening. The points haul keeps the Giants sitting at the top of the BMI Baby Elite League table, with the Nottingham Panthers scratching at their heels, just one point behind and with a game in hand.
The Giants began the weekend in fine form, treating the Mobilx (Newcastle) Vipers to a 5-1 thrashing, at the Odyssey, in the first game between the two teams this season. Goals from Todd Kelman, Jason Ruff, Mark Dutiaume and two from Jeff Hutchins provided the comfortable win for the Belfast team, with the Vipers only response scored by Jason Robinson.
The return match in Newcastle was a much tighter game as Vipers' goalie Curtis Cruickshank proved equal to everything the Giants could throw at him. Matt Beveridge put the home team on the scoreboard first, during the second period, and it wasn't until the start of the third period that the Giants managed to beat Cruickshank and equalise through Jeff Hutchins. Neither side could clinch victory during regulation or overtime, so for the second time this season the Giants found themselves facing a penalty shoot-out. Just as before, Mike Minard proved unbeatable in the Giants' goal, allowing the sole penalty goal by Jason Ruff to seal the win and another two points.
This coming weekend sees the Giants take on the Manchester Phoenix on Sunday, at Ice Sheffield, in their first taste of Challenge Cup action this season. Before that however, the Coventry Blaze are in town on Saturday evening and they'll be hungry for points having suffered two defeats last weekend to Cardiff and Hull.
