Four Point Weekend - Happy days!
18-Sep-2006The Belfast Giants found themselves on top of the bmiBaby Elite Ice Hockey League for the first time this season picking up 2 wins from 2 games over the weekend.
Saturday night started out very badly, the Giants finding themselves 4-1 down with only 10 minutes left. However the team dug deep and manage to equalise with goals from Jason Ruff, George Awada and Roman Gavalier.
Some poor defending however left Mike Minard to face a shot from Shawn Sutter that he could not keep out putting the Steelers 5-4 up with only 5 minutes left. Step up Captain George Awad to equalise with only 53 seconds left and Mike Minard on the bench.
The Coors Belfast Giants made it pay, scoring through a laser of a one timer from Curtis Huppe 1.19 into OT for the 6-5 come back win.
Sunday night saw the first visit of the season to Basingstoke and a first game againt the Mark Bernard-less Bison.
The first period was eventful, finishing 2-2 with Giants goals from Hutchins and Dutiaume sandwiching 2 Bison goals.
A scoreless second period left all to fight for in the 3rd and the Giants came out on top. Goals from Mark Dutiaume and George Awada putting the Giants 4-2 up.
Basingstoke pulled within one goal with 3 minutes remaining through Doug Sheppard, but Jeff Hutchins secured the points with an empty net goal in controversial circumstances. As he skated through on the empty net the Bison goalie impeded Hutchins and referee Nigel Boniface awarded the goal, despite the puck m issing the net.
This week sees a home and home series against the Newcastle Vipers, who will be smarting from becoming the first team to lose to the new boys Hull Stingrays. It could be another hard fought weekend looking for 4 more points.
