Where's the black cat when you need it?

It was the home Halloween game and it had it all â?? costumes, jinxes and blood on the ice! The Belfast Giants failed to break the Coventry jinx, but at least managed to take away one point from the hot-tempered encounter as the game finished 4-3 in overtime.

Hoping to avenge their only two straight defeats of the season so far, Belfast came out hard and the pipework rang out round the Odyssey as Todd Kelmanâ??s opening shot of the game came off the upright of Lehmanâ??s goal. Colin Ward notched up Belfastâ??s first goal from a Sean Berensâ?? pass at 4.01, and the Blaze replied by stepping up their offence and making Ryder work at the other end of the pad.

A first period nightmare then unfolded with defensive blunders giving Coventryâ??s Tait and Chartrand a goal each, separated by 13 seconds.

The second period saw the first penalty of the game, and Ruff and Kelman linked up to provide Wardy with his second of the night on the resulting powerplay. Blaze then got the chance to use their own special teams and the go-ahead goal came during a 5 on 3, with Oâ??Brien, the provider.

A final bruising twenty minutes will have left a few aches and pains in the locker room this morning, and it was local lad Graeme Walton who went down hard after Ashley Tait checked him hard from behind; Tait taking 2+10 for his efforts. While Walton was able to get up and skate away himself, Paxton Schulte wasnâ??t as lucky when Carpenter drew blood with an accidental high stick and took no further part in the game. Repaying the 5 on 3 favour, Ruff got his third assist of the night when Berens converted his pass and finished off the powerplay lesson.

Referee Hanson had his say in the closing 45 seconds and called Jason Bowen for elbows, giving Coventry the advantage, but Belfast held on for sudden death overtime. Joel Poirier sealed the win 22 seconds into overtime however, and Jason Bowen got a further 10 minute misconduct penalty on his exit from the penalty box.
