Vipers Vanquished

08-Jan-2006 | Discuss this Article

The Giants showed their class last night outgunning the Newcastle Vipers to claim a 4-0 win over the team that seem to be emerging as our nearest rivals.

In front of a fantastic crowd and superb atmosphere, the game was a hard hitting tense, tough affair, with Jason Bowen in particular throwing his weight about for the Giants and upsetting Andre Payette with a big hit that left his helmet sitting at the back of his head. The Giants claimed the lead at 9.34 of the first period with a well taken goal from Colin Shields. Shawn Skiehar picked up the puck from George Awada and skated down the left wing before centring to Shields to tuck the puck past Trevor Koenig in the Viper goal.

Leigh Jamieson made it 2-0 at 15.52 receiving the puck direct from a Theo Fleury Face off win and firing a flaoting shot that somehow snuck through the legs of Koenig, one which Koenig will have been disappointed not to have stopped.

As the period drew to a close, Mike Minard showed that nobody on our team will take any intimidation, standing up for himself first to Paul "Rocco" Ferone, receiving 2 minutes for roughing and then 6 seconds later in response to a snow shower from Andre Payette, the blocker was used again, and the catcher came off as Minard took Payette to the ice and caused a small scrum round the Giants goal. However there was still time for Theo Fleury to show his class, stealing the puck from Koenig and while on his kness, passing the puck to Todd Kelman to fire into the unguarded net making it 3-0 at 18.43.

The second period was just as hard hitting as the Giants consolidated their 3 goal lead. Mike Minard was outstanding making save after save, and making them look easy as the Giants were outshot by 16-6.

Into the 3rd period and at 45.54 Theo Fleury further extended the lead to 4-0 as coach Courtenay undressed the Newcastle defenceman, slipping the puck between his legs, and passed in front to Fleury to hammer home whilst diving through the air, and bringing the fantastic crowd to life once more. With just under ten minutes remaining, Nathan Craze entered the game letting man of the match Mike Minard leave to a standing ovation from the crowd, and leaving the defence of the shut out to Nathan Craze who didn't disappoint the Odyssey faithful. Then to cap the night off, the crowd finally got what they wanted with Andre Payette finally agreeing to drop the gloves with Jason Bowen, before Payette leapt in to hug Bowen to the ice before trying to land a few punches while they lay on the ice. Jason Bowen struggled back to his feet landing a couple of good over the top rights to Payette before they were finally broken up.

This set a new Giants record with 9 consecutive wins.
