Bison Trampled

26-Nov-2005 | Discuss this Article

In a rescheduled game, due to the unfortunate demise of the London Racers, the Coors Belfast Giants travelled to Baisingstoke to take on the Bison. Coming off a 5-0 home win at home to the Sheffield Steelers, this game marked the first in a 4 game road trip. The Bison have been struggling of late and are languishing toward the bottom of the Elite League. With the netminder problems they have suffered, Coach Mark Bernard took the ice between the pipes.

The Giants were explosive in the first period. Goals from Ed Courtenay, Colin Shields and Todd Kelman gave the visiting side a massive advantage. In a period that also saw Shawn Skiehar go toe to toe with the Bison’s Brad Cruikshank, Mark Bernard also vented his frustration. Following Todd Kelman’s goal to make it 3-0, Bernard threw his stick across the ice and stormed off to the bench where he remained for the rest of the game, Dan Green taking up the position in the crease.

In a game, that included 2 shorthanded goals from the Giants, they never seemed to play out of first gear. Another 2 goals in the second period, Man of the Match Courtenay and Shields each picking up their second goals of the game, gave the Giants an unassailable 5-0 lead.

Steve O’Brien was shown the gate midway through the period for being Third Man In, in an on ice brawl that included 7 Giants players and 5 Bison. And from the ensuing powerplay the Bison picked up their first and only goal of the game. Greg Chambers denying Mike Minard a third consecutive shut-out with only 5 minutes left in the second session.

The final period saw the Giants finish the Bison off in style. Goals from captain George Awada and a Leigh Jamieson slapshot rounding off an impressive win for the Giants and starting their long road journey with a 7-1 win. They now move on to once again face the Sheffield Steelers in the Hallam FM Arena. The Steelers suffered a heavy loss to bitter rivals Nottingham Panthers on Friday night, and coach Ed Courtenay will be hoping to add to the hurt of new coach Dennis Maxwell with another win for the Giants to take maximum points from the weekends games.
