17-Oct-2005The Coors Belfast Giants made it 7 games without defeat last night, scraping a draw with Cardiff in the dying seconds of the game.
After a long wait on the ice for the Devils to make an appearance, the Giants started slowly, with Cardiff piling on the early pressure. After just 2.56 Jason Bowen and Brad Voth had an altercation, with Voth just edging the fight. Four minutes later Theo Fleury gave the Devils their first powerplay of the evening, but the Welsh outfit failed to find the net.
After eleven minutes the Devils took a deserved lead, with Mike Garrow scoring. Cardiff extended their lead under two minutes later when Mark Richardson found a way past Minard.
With 15 minutes gone, Graeme Walton and Jason Bowen got involved with Brad Voth and Mike Garrow, the Cardiff pair sitting for an extra 2 minutes, giving the Giants their first powerplay of the night, 30 seconds later Vezio Sacratini joined his team mates in the box, but the Giants spurned the opportunity to score.
The game moved into the second period with Cardiff still holding a 2 goal lead, but the Giants started to press the Devils back and their persistence paid off at 29.04 with coach Ed Courtenay finishing off a Theo Fleury move.
The scoreline stayed 2-1 until midway through the third period when Louis Goulet scored from a Sacratini pass restoring the Devils three goal lead.
At 55.19 Curtis Huppe managed to force the puck home, after good work by Coach Courtenay.
With the game slipping away, netminder Mike Minard was pulled to give the Giants an extra skater, thankfully the gamble paid off, with Courtenay grabbing his third point of the game, again assisting Huppe as Belfast tied the game with 10 seconds left on the clock.
In a feisty overtime session, neither team could get the game winner, although Ed Courtenay was again involved, although this time sitting out for 4 minutes getting called for roughing with Regan Darby sitting out for the Devils.
The Giants now have a rest until Saturday night when they face the Devils at the Odyssey arena.
