Something Old, Something New...

08-Oct-2003

Itā??s over two years now since Sean Berens first stepped off the plane from Chicago IL, a typical Thursday afternoon in September. Just another player brought in by then coach Dave Whistle, to help strengthen the short benched Giants, Berens exploded on to the Odyssey ice and proceeded to become arguably the best player to ice in the Giants short history.

Berens finished the season with 30 goals, 37 assists, 67 points and a special place in the hearts of every Giants fan!

And now, heā??s back!

Just like two years ago Berens will make his debut against the Nottingham Panthers on home ice, and once again itā??s a Thursday night! But lets not dwell on the coincidences, following a successful year with the Vienna Capitals, our #18 is here to strengthen the Giants EIHL position and he couldnā??t have picked a better time to arrive. Both Nottingham and Sheffield have established themselves as major contenders for this years league title. The Giants hope that Berens can be as explosive on the ice now as he was in our championship wining season and help us deal a knockout blow to these UK hockey heavyweights.

But Sean Berens isnā??t the only one to be making his season debut against the Panthers. 22 year old Graeme Walton becomes the fourth player from Northern Ireland to ice for the Giants this season, joining McGimpsey, Martin and Morrison on the Giants bench. The young Belfast defenseman comes in as coach Rob Stewart, earlier this week, announced his retirement as a player, to concentrate on his coaching. Walton has already proved his skating ability in the extreme sport of Crushed Ice Skating, finishing second in the European Championships in Austria. His playing experience includes playing with Solihull, Dumfries and the GB Under-21 side. It is hoped that Walton will fit in well to what is an experienced Giants defense.

Both players will ice in what is to be an intriguing game against the Odyssey favorites Nottingham Panthers, Face off is at 7pm tomorrow night.
